Agua Vida is still a new kid on the block as it has only been open since April 2007, but it certainly looks the part. The walls are exposed brick; the soft, warm red contrasting nicely with the sparkle reflecting from the floor-length mirrors, and there are fresh flowers in abundance. The ambience is completed by an unobtrusive musical backdrop.
Sebastian, the senior stylist, had been selected to chop my locks. “You have very thick hair,” he commented. “Yup,” I responded, thinking you’re certainly not the first to notice. He then sat down and we discussed what to do with my great mop of hair, to which we decided mutually on a course of action and I settled back to await the outcome. I liked the way he seemed to become totally involved in styling my hair, paying it his complete attention. Finally, after snipping, brushing, drying and straightening, I was left with the finished product. It looked wonderful, and so smooth with the ends so soft. It was nice that someone was taking my hair so seriously!
Aqau Vida is more than just a great hair salon though, and there are two treatment rooms, each with specific functions. Amy, the senior beauty therapist, considers it essential to keep the relaxing treatments, such as the massages and facials, in a separate space to the other treatments, such as waxing. For the facials and massages, the relaxation part of the treatment is paramount; all aspects have been considered from sound proofing the door, to providing a serene interior that would make most high class spa resorts proud. Amy maintains exacting standards to ensure a top quality service for the customer, which is very reassuring, and they have teamed up with Dermalogica to provide customers with a bespoke service.
The treatment I requested was half a leg wax, for which Amy uses a lavender cream wax, chosen for its calming effect. It doesn’t get as hot as traditional honey wax, which means it can be used on any skin type and can be used for facial waxing. It’s also not as sticky, which means that you are not left with sticky patches on your skin – not a nice experience. I hardly noticed as Amy swiftly stripped my legs: quick and painless, all good in my book, and very reasonable at only £17.50.
There is a complete range of treatments on offer including St Tropez tanning as well as the tantalising Top-to-Toe Package, which includes a manicure, pedicure, express facial, back massage, eyebrow shape and hair blow-dry for only £115.
